One October Handbags

The Joanna Clutch, green patent leather with a salmon skin edge, by ONE OCTOBERRoxana Zal, who at age 14 was the youngest person ever to win a Primetime Emmy (for Something About Amelia, 1984), is all grown up and has her own line of luxury handbags and accessories.

The line, called ONE OCTOBER, uses salmon skin instead of leather to create classic pieces with a funky edge.

Says ONE OCTOBER (the team includes her longtime friend Naomi Stokeld):

"By incorporating salmon skin into our designs we have created a collection that environmentally conscious consumers can feel positive about carrying. Most exotic leathers are obtained from skins of endangered species. Salmon skin is only an industrial residue from the farmed salmon industry but it is considered "exotic" leather. By using salmon leather, ONE OCTOBER aims to deliver high fashion and quality, in an environmentally sustainable way."

The result, as you can see above, is chic and green. The Joanna Clutch, above, retails at $324 and has been seen carried by Shannon Doherty. Click below to browse the rest of the new ONE OCTOBER line, including a special item for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Quilted Nylon Map Bag, Handbag of the Day

It's getting pretty chilly lately where I live and so these plush, quilted nylon map bags from Coach look especially appealing (plus they've reminded me that I still need to dig out my winter coats!).

The bags come in only these two colors (both of which I love), and feature leather trim, a leather strap, exterior pockets galore (on the front, back, and under the flap), and a variety of multi-function pockets on the fabric-lined interior that are perfect for holding everything from a pen to a PDA. $358

The line also includes suitcases in other sizes and a vanity case. Don't miss the 26" suitcase in black!

Nancy Gonzalez Crocodile Hobo, Handbag of the Day

Nancy Gonzalez's Large Crocodile Hobo, a shape ironically in vogue at the moment, will leave no doubt that your portfolio is recession-proof. Made from Colombian crocodile, the shoulder bag features hidden magnetic closures and outer pockets for stashing key items like phones and PDAs. It measures 20 x 16 x 7 1/2 inches, and handles drop 8 inches. The bag is available at Vivre and retails for $4,350.

Sofia Coppola to Design Collection for Vuitton

Despite the fact that, as we reported last month, Louis Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs is getting sick of the fashion house's frequent collaboration projects, director Sofia Coppola has just signed on to design a new capsule collection for the brand. Coppola, a close friend of Jacobs' who recently appeared in a Vuitton ad (above) with her famed father Francis Ford Coppola, will reportedly create a range of handbags and shoes for the company. Though nothing's been confirmed, it's expected that the new collection will initially only be available in Japan like LV's current collaboration with Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo.

"I've kind of warned everybody up there [at LV] that I think they've gotten a little too into this idea ," Jacobs said of the collaboration projects just last month. "I'm glad that everybody gets behind it, but what they don't realize is that I do it at a pace that maintains the brand's integrity and seems really right, and I think that sometimes everybody loves a good idea so much that they kind of go too far and it kind of kills it." Perhaps he's making an exception for personal friends like Coppola.

The Burberry Mini Warrior, Handbag of the Day

We've featured Burberry Warrior bags before and since they're always spectacular we now have another one to share, and this time it's the Mini Warrior. Shown here in bright berry red leather accented with the traditional Burberry check pattern in happy shades of red, blue, and brown, it's a bag that has a sophisticated but casually upbeat vibe. I love the warrior bag shape but was never crazy about the over-sized metal studs, so I'm happy to see that they're miniaturized in this design. See more colors here, including a fierce and flashy gold. $1,595

Cheap Chic: Anya Hindmarch for Target

In its latest design collaboration, mass-retailer Target has teamed with handbag designer Anya Hindmarch, famous most recently for her cheeky and impossible-to-get "I'm Not a Plastic Bag" tote. This group of faux patent bags is a bit more styled and features options ranging from an oversized clutch to a chic yet roomy tote. Though the collection won't hit stores until October 12, shoppers will be able to purchase online at Anya Hindmarch's site from October 8 through October 12. Mouses, on your marks.

Miu Miu Nappa Patch Leather Bag, Handbag of the Day

With all the fall colors coming to the forefront it is a breath of fresh air to see this bag in a classically beautiful rose petal color. The Miu Miu Nappa Patch Leather Bag brings together narrow slices of sweet pink leather and a twisted leather shoulder strap in one fabulous package. Complete with a zip fastening along the top edge, a small logo discreetly set, and a satin lining this functional day bag will give your ensemble a pop of great color and a little bounce in your step for $1,445. I really like the variety in the shades of pink between the strips.

Alexis Hudson Aspen Handbag, Handbag of the Day

Continuing the ombre trend, Alexis Hudson's Aspen Handbag blends both black and brown sporting multiple pockets and an expandable bottom once unzipped. It's big enough to handle a long day's worth of necessities but not overwhelmingly large. With gold turnlocks and hardware, magnetic closure and canvas lining this bag is ready to handle whatever you throw at it ... or in it! The bottom of the bag unzips to give you two more inches of height and the long 22" straps make it easy to throw over your shoulder. ($895)

Chloe Milton Hobo, Handbag of the Day

It's the Milton Hobo bag by Chloe in a bright metallic purple that although normally expected around springtime can fit just as easily into a fall ensemble by pairing it with other vibrant jewel tones and rich autumn neutrals. It's fairly structured for a hobo, looking a little like a standard slouchy hobo bag sitting inside a bucket. Created of soft lamb's leather with golden hardware this bag features one of fall's hottest trends in the partial chain shoulder strap. Zips closed at the top and has two front slide pockets, $1,960.

Prada Ruffled Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Get your fix of feminine ruffles while still coming across as sleek, modern, and sophisticated with Prada's Nappa S Ruffled Clutch. It's part of Prada's fall runway collection and features tiers of big open ruffles on both sides reminiscent of a blouse with flouncy shoulders. The rest of the bag is fairly understated, featuring smooth nappa leather and a simple PRADA logo on the front, and although it's advertised as a clutch it does have a shoulder strap to make toting it around more convenient. $1,695

Pendleton Chinle Tote, Handbag of the Day

Having just returned from a trip to Montana, where I happily picked up a Pendleton handbag at Bob's Outdoor in downtown Livingston (not to be confused with Bob's Taxidermy, which is right up the road), imagine my surprise to find that Pendleton -- the Oregon family-owned woolen mill that's been around for 140 years -- is on trend for fall. Carried this season by retail's litmus-test-for-hip Opening Ceremony, the iconic brand seems to be making the reverse commute from country to town.

The Chinle Tote, at right, retails for $128 and measures 17 3/4 by 16 3/4 by 5 1/2 inches with 10 inch leather handles. The virgin wool print evokes early 20th century Navajo rugs from the Chinle region. Its base is made from canvas, and the bag is fully lined.

How Far Would You Go For Louis?

Louis Vuitton collectors whose obsession knows no bounds may have a voyage ahead of them. As the NY Sun reports, the only way to get your hands on one of the Louis Vuitton handbags designed by Rei Kawakubo the avant-garde founder of Comme des Garçons is to visit the pop-up store LVMH has set up in the Comme des Garçons store in Tokyo. The store is open through December and only shoppers who go there can place an order for one of Kawakubo's six designs. You cannot order by phone or internet and can only order one bag per person. And you don't even get your bag until after the shop closes and the orders are put into production. At least you don't have to trek pack to Tokyo to pick it up, the bags will be sent to the customer's local Louis Vuitton shop.
