Sommelier Smackdown

Here are two words that don't seem to go together, sommelier and smackdown. The phrase conjures up images of tuxedo-clad gents bashing each other over the head with wine bottles in the squared circle. There will be no wrestling involved but the Sommelier Smackdown in Philadelphia this summer will include local sommeliers competing against Keith Wallace and Brian Freedman of the Wine School of Philadelphia. The contestants have to create the perfect food and wine pairing, using only wines obtained through a local PLCB wine shop. The winner is declared by the guests at the event. The first session of the Smackdown is on June 13 at the Wine School of Philadelphia. Tickets cost $55 per person for the tasting event.
